A mother has Parental Responsibility (‘PR’) for her child automatically, from the day the child is born.
A father usually has parental responsibility if he’s either:
- married to the child’s mother
- or the child’s birth was registered after December 1st, 2003 and his name is on the certificate as the father.
If you do not have PR, you can get it by getting the mother to agree, or by seeking a court order.
